Rivian R2 vs BMW iX3 vs Tesla Model Y: size and garage fit
The Rivian R2 is the shortest and the tallest of the three, and on the UK garage bay of those three only the BMW iX3 clears the door rule.

What the table measures
Updated: 3 November 2026.
This guide compares published exterior size. Length is bumper to bumper. Width is the official body width and excludes the mirrors. Height is to the roof, and the wheelbase is the distance between the axles. The first car in the table is the base. Every other row shows the difference as that car minus the base, so a positive length means a longer car. The figures are read from each car's sheet when the page is built. Nothing in the table is typed in by hand.
The cars are the Rivian R2, the BMW iX3 and the Tesla Model Y. Two more rows sit underneath for context: the Subaru Trailseeker, listed beside the R2, and the Rivian R1S, the larger Rivian. Scout's Traveler is not in our dataset yet; Scout lists its dimensions as approximate.
The three cars
The Rivian R2 is 4722 mm long, 1905 mm wide and 1699 mm tall, with a 2936 mm wheelbase. Of the three headline cars it is the shortest and the tallest. A shorter nose and tail is what a tight parking space notices first. The extra height is what a low ceiling notices.
Against that base, the BMW iX3 differs by +60 mm in length, −10 mm in width, −64 mm in height and −39 mm in wheelbase. It is a little longer, a little narrower and clearly lower. The wheelbase is shorter too, so the extra length is not simply a longer cabin in the same proportion.
The Tesla Model Y differs by +72 mm in length, +15 mm in width, −78 mm in height and −46 mm in wheelbase. It is the longest and the widest of the three, and the lowest. Width is the figure that decides a narrow bay, because the door gap is taken from the official width, not from the length.
Garage fit
The garage check uses the garage-bay tool's own presets and its own clearance rules, not a bay invented for this page. The UK preset is 5000 mm long, 2500 mm wide and 2100 mm high. Door clearance is the bay width minus the car's width, then halved, so the figure is the gap on each side. The tool treats the doors as clear at 300 mm or more on each side, and the rear walkway as clear at 600 mm or more of spare length. Official width excludes mirrors. The tool's mirror allowance is 220 mm on each side, and this table does not add that allowance back on.
A car can be short enough for the bay and still fail the door rule, or clear the doors and still leave too little room to walk behind the bumper. Height is the ceiling minus the car.
The BMW iX3 clears the tool's 300 mm door rule by 2.5 mm; the Rivian R2 and Tesla Model Y fall just short.
Range, as claimed
Each figure below is the maker's own claim, with the test cycle that maker names. EPA in the US and WLTP in Europe are different cycles, so the two columns are not comparable. Range depends on wheels, tyres and temperature, so treat every figure here as a manufacturer's claim, not a result we measured.
The Model Y is not in this table: Tesla's range figures sit on pages we cannot read from a script, so we do not quote them.
| Car and variant | Claimed range | Cycle and status | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rivian R2 Performance | up to 330 miles | EPA-estimated | Rivian, 12 Mar 2026 |
| Rivian R2 Premium | 330 mi | Rivian-estimated | Rivian |
| Rivian R2 Standard RWD Long Range | up to 345 miles | Rivian-estimated; first half of 2027 | Rivian, 12 Mar 2026 |
| BMW iX3 50 xDrive | up to 805 km, within 679 to 805 km | WLTP, provisional figures | BMW |
Trailseeker and the R1S
The Subaru Trailseeker differs from the R2 by +123 mm in length, −45 mm in width, −24 mm in height and −86 mm in wheelbase. On the UK bay its side gap is 320 mm and its spare length is 155 mm. It is a supporting row beside the R2, the iX3 and the Model Y.
The Rivian R1S differs by +378 mm in length, +173 mm in width, +264 mm in height and +140 mm in wheelbase. That is a different size of vehicle. On the UK bay the spare length is −100 mm and the side gap is 211 mm.
Boot space, and cars we do not list
Boot figures are not like-for-like, so they stay off the table. Use the model page when the boot is the question, and this table when the question is the body.
The garage-bay tool's single-car preset is 6706 mm by 3658 mm by 2438 mm. Spare length there is 1984 mm for the R2, 1924 mm for the iX3 and 1912 mm for the Model Y. The side gaps are 876.5 mm, 881.5 mm and 869 mm. Price and driving impressions are outside this comparison.
UK garage bay
| Model | Spare length | Each side | Doors | Rear walkway |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rivian R2 | 278 | 297.5 | short | short |
| BMW iX3 | 218 | 302.5 | clear | short |
| Tesla Model Y | 206 | 290 | short | short |
| Subaru Trailseeker | 155 | 320 | clear | short |
| Rivian R1S | −100 | 211 | short | short |
The UK preset is 5000 mm long, 2500 mm wide and 2100 mm high. Door clearance is the bay width minus the car width, halved. Doors are clear at 300 mm or more on each side. The rear walkway is clear at 600 mm or more of spare length. Official width excludes mirrors. The tool's mirror allowance is 220 mm on each side, and this table does not add that allowance.
