Braked towing is 650 kg.

Wartburg 353 1966–1985 car dimensions: 4380 mm long, 1640 mm wide and 1495 mm high. Unladen weight is 970 kg. Braked towing is 650 kg.

The cabin seats five with a flat floor and comfortable front seats offering good support for long trips. A standard heater and two-speed blower provide ventilation and warmth, with fresh air outlets and later C-pillar vents. Radio is optional. Instruments are simple and clear. No advanced driver aids appear in period specs.

The Tourist estate offers a practical load bay with seats up around 550 litres. Fold the rear bench forward for a flat 1.91 m floor and up to 1800 litres. The wide tailgate opens high for easy access, though rear wheelarches narrow the space.

Payload reaches 440 kg on the Tourist. Braked towing capacity is 650 kg and unbraked 500 kg, enough for a small trailer on family or light work trips. Soft suspension and long travel handle rough roads well when loaded.

The cabin is a true five-seater with generous space and soft padded seats covered in fabric or fabric-vinyl combination that provide good side support and low fatigue on long trips. Front seats offer longitudinal adjustment and reclining fittings on de luxe versions, with armrests on all doors. Fresh-air heating uses a two-stage blower for strong airflow without drafts via rear pillar outlets, and an optional steel sliding roof adds open-air comfort while keeping the cabin free of wind noise when cracked open. Padded dash edges, sun visors and door pulls complete a practical, quiet interior suited to family or work use.

The car runs on a petrol-oil two-stroke mixture, initially 1:33 and later standardised at 1:50 with normal-grade fuel. The tank holds 42 to 44 litres and the factory norm consumption is listed at 9.3 litres per 100 km for both saloon and Tourist. real-world figures from period tests stay in the 8-10 litre range under mixed driving.

Servicing is straightforward thanks to the simple layout. The independent suspension needs no greasing for 50 000 km, the air filter lasts 25 000 km and plugs are swapped every 20-25 000 km. Gearbox oil capacity is about 1.8 litres. cooling system holds roughly 7-8 litres of antifreeze mix. Guarantee cover was one year or 20 000 km from 1969.

Safety equipment includes inertia-reel belts (front standard, rear later on higher grades), dual-circuit hydraulics, front discs from the 353 W onwards, a rear brake-force regulator, child locks, padded dash and seat tops, a collapsible steering column and reinforced door locks. The body uses controlled crumple zones front and rear with a rigid passenger cell. official crash tests were completed successfully and certificates issued.

Living with the Tourist means regular checks of the free-floating rear overhang for sag under load, cavity waxing to slow rust, and attention to the two-stroke mix and freewheel. Parts remain available through specialist clubs and the car is easy for home mechanics to keep running.
