Volkswagen Golf 2008–2014 car dimensions: 4199 mm long, 1786 mm wide and 1479 mm high. Unladen weight is 1,217 kg. Braked towing is 1,500 kg.
Semi-automatic Climatic air conditioning is standard across the range and keeps cabin temperature steady with simple dials. Higher grades add dual-zone Climatronic for separate driver and passenger settings. Cruise control appears on Match and GT models. Parking sensors with optical display are standard on Match and above, optional elsewhere. A rear-view camera hides behind the badge and shows on the radio screen when fitted. Touch-screen navigation such as RNS 510 is optional on most grades. No factory Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning or lane-keep systems.
Boot holds 350 litres with seats up. Fold the 60/40 rear seats and space grows to 1305 litres. Loading length reaches about 1.5 m. Seats do not fold fully flat, leaving a small step.
Braked towing capacity reaches 1500 kg on many engines, with unbraked limits around 600-700 kg and nose weight of 75 kg. Payload sits near 550 kg depending on engine and equipment. The car handles light trailers and caravans steadily on motorways.
No heavy-duty cooling or reinforced suspension packages appear in the published specs. Sports suspension lowers the car on some trims but is not for load work.
The cabin feels refined and notably quiet thanks to a sound-damping interlayer in the laminated windscreen, thicker side glass and improved door seals. Supportive front seats offer height and lumbar adjustment, with sports versions adding stronger side bolsters for better hold. Semi-automatic Climatic air conditioning is standard, dual-zone Climatronic optional on higher grades. An optional panoramic sunroof brings in more light and space. Soft-touch plastics, clear instruments and practical storage complete a solid, comfortable everyday feel.

Fuel economy varies by engine. The 1.6 TDI BlueMotion stands out with claimed combined figures up to 74.3 mpg and 99 g/km CO2. Other diesels such as the 2.0 TDI return around 55 mpg, while 1.4 TSI petrols sit near 44-45 mpg combined. Start-stop and low-rolling-resistance tyres help on BlueMotion Technology models.
Servicing follows either fixed intervals or long-life variable schedule. Fixed calls for an oil service every 10,000 miles or one year, interval service at 20,000 miles/two years and inspection at 40,000 miles/three years. Long-life can stretch oil changes further based on driving style, with inspection still required around 60,000 km or two years. DSG gearboxes need fluid changes at set mileages.
Safety is strong with a five-star Euro NCAP result under the 2009 protocol, scoring 97% for adults and 84% for children. Standard kit includes seven airbags (driver, passenger, sides, curtains and driver’s knee), ESP, ABS with brake assist, traction control, seat-belt pretensioners and Isofix points. Whiplash-optimised head restraints and a stable body structure add further protection.
Keeping the car means regular oil and filter changes, especially on TSI and TDI engines, plus cambelt replacement on diesels around four years or 130,000 miles. The galvanised body carries a long anti-corrosion warranty. Higher trims add heated front seats and dual-zone climate that make daily use more pleasant, while the quiet cabin and solid build reduce fatigue on longer trips.
