Volkswagen Beetle 1997–2005 car dimensions: 4081 mm long, 1724 mm wide and 1498 mm high. Braked towing is 1,000 kg.

The cabin has a retro round design with large gauges, a dash-mounted flower vase and cloth or optional leather seats. Manual air conditioning is standard on most engines and optional on base 1.4 and 1.6 models. Cruise control is available on higher grades but not the smallest engine. Rear parking sensors are an option on most versions. Power windows, central locking and a basic radio/CD are fitted. No advanced electronic aids beyond ABS and ESP appear.

Boot space is modest with the rear seats up. Folding the rear backrest expands the load area for larger items. A removable luggage cover is fitted and a 12V socket is available in the boot on higher models.

Braked towing limit is 1000 kg and unbraked is 600 kg across the range, with a 75 kg towbar load. Payload sits around 340-480 kg depending on engine and equipment. The car suits light leisure towing but is not set up for heavy work use.

Front seats are firm, supportive and height-adjustable with good head and leg room for taller drivers. Cabin uses high-grade materials with a distinctive round design, pollen filter and manual air conditioning. Optional tilt/slide power glass sunroof adds light. Rear space is tighter with heat and A/C ducts but limited head and leg room. Storage includes door nets, centre armrest and cupholders.

Fuel tank holds 55 litres.

Euro NCAP four stars for adult occupant protection.

Standard dual front airbags, front side airbags, ABS and LATCH/Isofix.

Daytime running lights and rigid safety cell with crumple zones standard.

Service intervals oil change 10 000 miles or 1 year. LongLife variable up to about 30 000 km or 2 years.

Fully galvanised body with 12-year corrosion warranty.

Engines range from 1.4-litre and 2.0-litre petrol to 1.8T turbo and 1.9 TDI diesel. Official combined fuel use varies by engine and gearbox, with diesels the most economical. Tank capacity is 55 litres across the range.

Servicing follows fixed time-and-distance or LongLife schedules depending on driving style. Oil and filter changes form the base interval, with brake fluid every two years and pollen filter replacement at set points. The body is fully galvanised.

Crash protection includes a rigid safety cell, front and rear crumple zones, dual front airbags, front side airbags (later head-thorax), ABS and seat-belt pretensioners. Euro NCAP scored four stars for occupants. ESP became more widely available later in the run. IIHS rated the structure good.

Living with the car means easy panel repairs thanks to bolted plastic bumpers and wings. Standard equipment covers remote locking, immobiliser and full-size spare. Higher trims add heated front seats and sunroof. Reliability records are solid for the period.
