Euro NCAP 5-star rating from 2010 test of this generation

Standard safety kit includes 7 airbags, ABS with EBD and BA, VSC+, TRC, HAC, ISOFIX and WIL seats

Service interval every 15 000 km or 12 months

Engines use chain-driven timing. petrol and diesel options with Toyota Optimal Drive for lower consumption and emissions

Fuel economy varies by engine. Petrol 1.6 and 1.8 units return combined figures around the mid-6 to low-7 l/100 km range. Diesel options, including the revised 2.0 D-4D and later 1.6 D-4D, deliver lower consumption in the mid-4 to mid-5 l/100 km area depending on transmission and load.

Servicing follows a 15 000 km or annual schedule with alternating minor and major checks. Timing chains on all engines remove belt-change costs. Some markets include a 5-year/90 000 km service plan.

Safety equipment is comprehensive from the base model: seven airbags covering front, side, curtain and knee, plus full electronic aids for stability, traction and hill starts. The generation earned a maximum five-star Euro NCAP score. Later cars added Toyota Safety Sense with pre-collision, lane departure and auto high beam as standard.

Living with the car is straightforward thanks to the modular Easy Flat seats that fold flat without removing headrests, generous storage and Toyota’s reputation for reliability. Regular oil and filter changes keep running costs predictable.
