The 2.4-litre D-4D diesel delivers strong low-end torque with improved economy over the previous engine. Combined figures start from 6.4 l/100 km on efficient versions, with an 80-litre tank. A 2.8-litre option arrived later in the generation for more power.

Routine servicing follows a 15 000 km or 12-month schedule, whichever comes first. Oil and filter changes form the core, with brake fluid every two years and longer intervals for coolant and filters under normal conditions.

Passive safety includes a stronger ladder frame and seven airbags covering front, side, curtain and knee. Active systems cover stability, traction, hill start and trailer sway. Toyota Safety Sense adds pre-collision with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert and road sign assist, lifting the Euro NCAP score from three to five stars when fitted.

The tougher chassis and reinforced deck support heavy use and towing up to 3.5 tonnes. Regular services keep the 4x4 systems and diesel reliable for long ownership.
