The Essence cabin has a 10-inch touchscreen with wireless and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto plus a 10-inch digital cockpit. Fuel economy stays low thanks to mild-hybrid petrol and efficient diesel options. The 1.5 TSI mHEV returns around 5-6 litres per 100 km on the combined cycle while the 2.0 TDI dips below 5 litres in favourable conditions. A 66-litre tank gives long range between fills.
Servicing follows the usual Volkswagen-group pattern. You can choose fixed intervals of 15 000 km or one year, or the LongLife programme that stretches to 30 000 km or two years depending on driving style. Oil and filter changes form the core of every visit.
Safety is strong from the base model. Euro NCAP awarded five stars with high adult and child scores. Even Essence brings Front Assist with pedestrian detection, Lane Assist, multi-collision braking, a full set of airbags including a centre airbag, and electronic stability control.
