The cabin has a height- and length-adjustable steering wheel, multifunction trip computer showing outside temperature, consumption and service intervals, electrically adjustable heated mirrors, pollen filter, and 1/3-2/3 split folding rear seats with ISOFIX. Manual air conditioning comes in the PRIME package and automatic Climatronic in PRIME TOP. Cruise control sits in the EXCLUSIVE and DYNAMIC PLUS packages. Rear parking sensors are an extra. ABS, side airbags and power steering are standard. ESP is optional on this engine.
Boot space measures 548 litres with the rear seats up and expands to 1512 litres when they fold flat. Tie-down points and an optional variable load floor keep loads secure and level with the sill.
Braked towing capacity is 1200 kg and unbraked 500 kg, with a 60 kg nose weight. Payload is 510 kg. Roof load is 75 kg. A luggage net partition is available for the Combi to separate the load area.
The cabin is practical and spacious with a clear, simple instrument panel. Height-adjustable front seats and a height- and length-adjustable steering wheel help drivers of different sizes get comfortable. Split-folding rear seats (1/3-2/3) and seat-back pockets add everyday usability. Tinted glass with UV filter is standard. Optional packages add air conditioning or Climatronic climate control plus heated front seats.

The 1.6 MPI petrol unit is a simple multipoint-injection four-cylinder. Official combined consumption for the Combi is 7.1 l/100 km. urban and extra-urban figures are listed as 9.9 and 5.5 l/100 km. It runs on unleaded 95 RON fuel and the tank holds 55 litres.
A service-interval indicator is fitted as standard and shows remaining kilometres and days. Flexible service intervals (WIV) were introduced for this generation and can extend oil-change periods to a maximum of 30 000 km or two years on petrol engines when the correct oil is used.
Standard safety equipment comprises ABS with mechanical brake assist, dual front airbags (passenger airbag switchable), front side airbags, height-adjustable front belts with pretensioners, three three-point rear belts, three rear head restraints and ISOFIX anchorages on the outer rear seats. ESP is available as an option. The first-generation Octavia scored four Euro NCAP stars for adult protection in the 2001 test.
The fully galvanised body and large estate boot (548–1 512 litres) make the car practical for long-term ownership. Shared VW-group mechanicals keep routine parts and servicing straightforward.
