The S grade has a traditional two-tone interior trim with power-assisted steering, driver's airbag, front seatbelt pretensioners and engine immobiliser as standard. Servicing follows a 12-month or 15,000 km interval. The engines use a timing chain that lasts with regular oil changes. The car has a reputation for being easy and cheap to keep running.
Crash protection earned two stars in the 1997 Euro NCAP test. Standard safety kit on the S includes a driver's airbag, front seatbelt pretensioners, adjustable height seatbelt anchors, two ISOFIX points and child safety locks on rear doors. ABS with EBD and Brake Assist plus passenger airbag are options or higher-grade items. Body reinforcements and side-impact beams add structure strength.
