Mazda MX-5 2015–2023 car dimensions: 3915 mm long, 1735 mm wide and 1235 mm high. Unladen weight is 1,074 kg. Boot space with the seats up is 127 litres.
The cabin centres on a 7-inch colour touchscreen with Mazda Connect, HMI commander, and standard Apple CarPlay plus Android Auto connectivity. Cruise control is fitted across the range. Climate control is manual on base grades and automatic on higher ones. Driver aids include standard Smart City Brake Support for automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and a wide-angle reversing camera. Parking sensors appear on some grades and markets. Higher trims add traffic-sign recognition and other refinements.
Boot space is 127 litres. The two-seat layout leaves no folding option. The space is deep enough for a couple of soft bags but limited for larger luggage.
The cabin is a tight two-seater with low bucket seats that hug you for sports driving. Seats are manual (6-way driver, 4-way passenger) and heated with three settings on most grades, in cloth or leather/Nappa options. Leather wraps the wheel, shifter and parking brake. A power retractable hardtop seals like a coupe when up or opens fully in about 13 seconds. Transparent windblocker cuts buffeting. Climate is manual on base or automatic higher up, with dual removable cupholders and simple rotary controls.
Engine oil and filter max interval 12 months or 12,000 km (7,500 miles)
5-star ANCAP rating (2016 test, covers 2015-2023)
Standard i-Activsense: Smart City Brake Support, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning
Dual front and side airbags, DSC, TCS, Hill Launch Assist, rearview camera, TPMS
Fuel tank 45 L. premium or regular unleaded per market
Fuel use sits in the efficient range for a sports car. Published figures include around 9.0 L/100 km city and 7.0/6.6 highway in one market for the 2.0-litre, or 26/34/29 mpg US combined, and WLTP combined near 6.3-7.6 L/100 km depending on engine and gearbox. Tank holds 45 litres.
Servicing follows a flexible oil monitor with a hard ceiling of 12 months or 12,000 km (7,500 miles) for oil and filter plus tyre rotation. Longer jobs include air filter around 22,500-56,000 km, manual gearbox oil at 48,000-96,000 km or 2-4 years, coolant at 192,000 km or 10 years first change, and spark plugs at 120,000 km (75,000 miles). Roof drains need cleaning every 6 months.
Safety kit is solid for a light roadster. Standard gear covers low-speed AEB (Smart City Brake Support), blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, high-beam control, stability and traction control, hill launch, dual front plus side airbags with head protection, side beams, belt pretensioners and a rear camera. Some markets add traffic-sign recognition or driver attention alert on higher grades. ANCAP gave five stars under 2016 rules. NHTSA and IIHS have not rated it.
Living with the car means watching the hardtop drains and mechanism, rotating tyres often, and sticking to the oil monitor. It is light on brakes and tyres in normal use but harder on them if driven spiritedly. Reliability is generally strong with few major issues reported for the generation.
