Citroën C1 2005–2014 car dimensions: 3435 mm long, 1630 mm wide and 1465 mm high. Unladen weight is 800 kg. Boot space with the seats up is 139 litres.

The cabin seats four adults with good elbow and headroom for its size and a large glass area for visibility. Heating is standard. Manual air conditioning is available on higher trims. A basic RDS radio/CD player with auxiliary socket is fitted. Power-assisted steering is standard on most grades. ABS with EBD and cornering stability control are standard. ESP is optional on higher trims. No advanced driver aids are fitted.

Boot space is 139 litres under the parcel shelf. Folding the rear seats expands it to 751 litres up to the roof on the 5-door. A full-size spare wheel sits under the floor.

The car is not intended for towing, with manufacturer towing capacity of zero. Payload is 315 kg. It suits light urban duties only.

The cabin feels surprisingly roomy for a short city car thanks to the long wheelbase and thin front seat backs that free up rear knee space. Big glass areas and high seating give an open, airy view. Simple cloth or part-leather seats suit urban trips, with plenty of handy storage bins in the dash, console and doors. Height-adjustable steering is available and electric front windows come on higher trims. Air conditioning is optional or standard depending on grade.

1.0i petrol returns around 4.5-4.6 l/100 km combined

Service interval every 15 000 km or 12 months for petrol

Euro NCAP 4 stars for adult occupant protection in 2005

Standard ABS with EBD and CSC, dual front airbags

Side airbags and ISOFIX on higher trims, ESP available

The 1.0i 68 petrol engine is frugal for city use, with official combined figures near 4.5 l/100 km and low CO2 around 103-109 g/km. Extra-urban runs can stretch further. A small 35-litre tank keeps fill-ups light and cheap.

Petrol models need oil and filter changes every 15 000 km or once a year. Diesel versions stretch to 30 000 km or two years. Basic checks keep running costs low on this simple, light car.

It scored four Euro NCAP stars for adult protection in 2005 tests, with a stable passenger cell. Standard kit includes ABS, electronic brakeforce distribution, cornering stability control and dual front airbags. Higher grades add side airbags and ISOFIX points. ESP was optional early on.

The compact size and low weight make it easy and cheap to keep. Full-size spare is standard. Watch for common early clutch and water-pump issues, but overall it stays simple and inexpensive to own for city duties.
