The XM is a plug-in hybrid. Official WLTP figures for the original V8 model show combined fuel use of 1.5–1.6 l/100 km and electricity use of 28.9–30.1 kWh/100 km, with pure-electric range of 82–88 km. The fuel tank holds about 69 litres. Later 50e variants list different WLTP numbers but share the same hybrid layout and charging approach.

Servicing uses BMW Condition Based Service. Sensors and algorithms set oil, brake and other intervals according to how the car is driven rather than fixed mileage. The next service distance or date appears in the instrument cluster and can be read from the key at a dealer. No fixed kilometre interval is published specifically for the XM beyond the CBS system.

Standard passive safety includes driver and passenger airbags, front side airbags, front and rear head airbags, and three-point belts with stoppers, pretensioners and force limiters on all seats, plus crash sensors and tyre-pressure display. Active systems fitted as standard include DSC with ABS, cornering brake control, brake assist, M xDrive and the M sport differential, plus Active Roll Comfort. Driving Assistant (front collision warning, lane departure warning with steering support, evasion aid, speed-limit info) and Parking Assistant Plus (surround view, reversing assistant, remote 3D view) are standard. No Euro NCAP star rating has been published for the XM.

Living with the car means regular CBS checks at a BMW partner, keeping the high-voltage battery charged for best efficiency, and using the standard remote services for preconditioning. Soft-close doors, four-zone climate and the heat package reduce daily friction. The large battery and hybrid system need dealer expertise for any high-voltage work.
