The 640i uses a 3.0-litre turbo petrol six with combined consumption of 7.4-7.7 l/100 km and CO2 output of 172-180 g/km under Euro 6 rules. A 70-litre tank is fitted.
Servicing follows the Condition Based Service system. Sensors and algorithms set oil, filter, brake and fluid needs according to actual use rather than fixed mileage. Intervals commonly reach up to two years or around 30 000 km depending on conditions.
The car was not subjected to a Euro NCAP crash test. Standard kit covers multiple airbags for front and side protection, dynamic stability control, ABS with brake assist and inertia-reel belts with pretensioners on all seats. Optional driving assistants add further collision and lane support.
Keeping the car centres on following CBS prompts for oil, brakes and filters. Regular checks of fluid levels and tyre condition keep it reliable. The efficient petrol engine and standard safety systems make ownership straightforward for a grand tourer of this type.
